I don’t remember it exactly, but when I was around a year old I took my first step on my own. It was only then I believed I could walk. That day, I learned an important lesson in life; if I were to do something or reach somewhere, I have to have the courage to take the first step.
But as I grew, things changed. I became smarter. Whenever I wanted to do something creative, something big, something new, I applied my smartness to judge the difficulty level. Mostly, I scrapped the idea even before I started. I forgot the first lesson I learnt in life that I have to take the first step if I were to walk the distance. I never took that first step for a long time.
Things changed again. This time for better. Years ago, I saw a small kid struggling to walk on his own. He was trying but was falling over and over again. Finally, he made it. He took his first step and I was mesmerized with his smile and happiness. For a moment, my memory flashed back into my own childhood.
Ever since, I do not fear to take the first step forward. Many a times, I have tripped, fallen and got hurt. Yes, I have failed too. But not before I took the first step.
Today, every time I want to do something new, which is even more exciting, even more challenging, I remember – ‘It was only when I took my first step, I believed I could walk’. And I take my first step again.
